February 21, 2013

For my genius project, I've decided to do a mix of fashion design and sewing. I really like this project because no matter how many times I've tried to pursue clothes designing, I have failed. This is probably because I have a broken sewing machine and a lack of talent.

I'm excited to get started on this because if I actually do end up improving, then hopefully by the end I will have some new clothes without having to spend as much money. My grandma was the inspiration for this interest in fashion. I used to sit down with her and watch her sew and I was always very interested but I was always too young or talentless to do it myself.

I will probably start off by doing simple things like sewing straight lines or making a pillow and as each week goes by I'll attempt to create more difficult things. Hopefully by the 4th week or so I will start to make my final product, making a shirt the first week, then a skirt, and so on. I'm a little nervous that this isn't going to work out since I have almost no experience with sewing and my goal is to make a wearable outfit.......... I have pretty high expectations for myself and I know from past experience that I don't have a lot of talent when it comes to artistic things, but I'm hoping everything works out!

As of right now I've just been doing research, hoping to find some good websites or books for tutorials. I've found a few cool websites for outfit patterns, but I think I'm getting a little ahead of myself. I should probably learn how to actually use my sewing machine before planning to make these elaborate outfits.

I'm hoping to learn different aspects of sewing each week. For example, the first week I could focus on the basics of the sewing machine, such as different stitches that can be used. The next week I might focus more on learning how to sew the hem on things, and so on.

Hopefully within the next few days I will get all my materials together and finally start learning! yay

I really like your idea to make a wearable outfit! I think its really creatuve to turn an interest in something into a hobby that can save you money and make your wardrobe more original. When I was younger, my grandma helped me make a pair of pajama pants and it was actually harder than it seemed. Something that I learned from sewing with my grandma is that It's really important to iron the fabric and pin it together so it looks clean and not messy. And another thing, videos really do help because the patterns can be challenging depending on what your making. Speaking of that, Is your final product just going to be a skirt and a shirt or will you make a scarf or other accessories?

This sounds really interesting! I remember when I first tried sewing in Family Consumer Science in Middle School Just putting together a pillow was hard for me; I imagine making an outfit must be much more challenging. I like how you decided to focus on a different technique each week. That way, you'll be able to combine all the skills you've learned to make your final outfit. I can't wait to see how this will turn out.

Your project sounds really fun! I have been sewing for a while so if you have any questions I may be able to answer. One recommendation that I have for you is to buy physical patterns. There are a lot of fun patterns online but the best (and definitely the easiest) thing to do is to go to JoAnn and get real patterns. I also recommend buying fabric scissors. You can cut fabric with normal scissors but it is a thousand times easier to is you have the special ones.

Good luck!

Jen, can't wait to hear the crazy stories of your progress in this project. I would LOVE to see the final product, as it sounds really awesome. As Brooke said, you will need fabric scissors, and I just wanted to add that if you want to avoid fraying I suggest you buy "No-Fray" or a similar item. I have found it very helpful in the past. As a typical teenager, I am interested in fashion as well and would love you to keep me posted. Can't wait to see what happens, good luck!
